Some thoughts on Mansfield Park

I was debating about whether to post this now or wait until Sunday, but my thoughts on Mansfield Park have been posted over on the PBS.org blog, Remotely Connected.  I was thrilled to be asked to do this.  Check it out now, or wait until Sunday night and weigh in with your own opinion.

Fanny Price is a ninny.  (Forgive me, dear Jane.)  I’ve tried to like her and I can’t.

When I was first asked to blog about Mansfield Park, the editor mentioned that she saw “such similarity” between me and Fanny. I had to stop to consider whether or not that was an insult.

I am encouraged by your article re: MP. I love MP, and understand completely why it is not a favorite for most people. The thing I love about Fanny is her strength of character amidst the incredible amount of opposition and manipulation she experienced. She had to really know herself and be firm in the truth in order to handle the people in her life without going crazy! I am hoping this adaptation does her justice.

Having not read the book, I can only comment on last night's version.

I am truly at a loss for words when it comes to the character of Fanny. She seemed like a child who never wanted to grow up, from her hairstyle (yes, it should have been pulled up, if not by a maid, then at least by herself), to her mannerisms, to her constant pouting!

The Crawfords reminded me a little of the Thorpes in Northanger Abbey. Mary Crawford truly annoyed me with her money & status is better than virtue mentality.

Ah, I guess I shall have to read the book!

I liked it...for a 90 minute adaptation. The Crawford's were appropriately mean spirited and manipulative. I would have liked to have seen more of the evil Aunt Norris. She was such a witch in the book.

I can't like her either... never seing the movie but read the book a dosen of times, in english and spanish( in case the character was more amiable in spanish, lol) but my favorite is Miss Crawford...
